James "Jim" Hersey

Passed away on August 28, 2019

It is with great sadness that the Hersey family announces the passing of James Hersey, age 83. Jim was outside, tending to his yard and garden when he suffered a stroke. Despite the prompt response of neighbour and medical staff, Jim passed away at the QEII Hospital the following day.

Jim was in the navy when he met his wife Heather (Hill) Hersey. He served proudly, receiving many commendations and awards including one for a challenging high sea rescue of a stricken Greek tanker off the coast of Nova Scotia, ensuring that many of those mariners could return safely to their family. With a young family of his own, Jim decided to transition from the navy to civilian life to better support his family. After the navy, Jim successfully managed a Shell Service Station in downtown Dartmouth for over 20 years before retiring in 1997. His friendly nature and great service made many loyal customers.

Jim and Heather are survived by their two sons, Jamie and David Hersey, and his sisters Linda (Hersey) Smith and Marie Hersey.

The celebration of life will be at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth on September 7th at 13:00. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the QEII Foundation.

Dear Jamie, David and the Hersey Family,

Jim was a part of our life for a very long time; first as my father's best friend (Len Neal). I always remembered that you could not call our house at 8:00 p.m. every evening because it was Len's and Jim's time to chat and often for hours. Jim and Heather attended Wanda's, Tracy's and Jay's weddings and I am sure he was kept up to date with our on goings. Upon the passing of Len, Jim always checked in with Mom to offer any help she needed. In recent years, Jim became a wonderful companion to mom always offering to help out with the yard and other tasks. Jim always had a story and sense of humour often making me laugh when he was around when I visited mom. Jim will be missed dearly.

You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Jamie, David and the Hersey Family
I send my deepest condolence and love to you all on the passing of your dad, a kind man and a great coffee-mate. We had many a chat and laugh down on the Corner of Baker and Portland at MacDonalds.

To: Jamie & David Hersey:
I have known Jim for more than 30 years. Like many car owners in Dartmouth he worked on my car, and always to the utmost satisfaction. Perfection was his trademark. A great citizen with great sense of humour. He always took time to speak with me.
“Please accept our deepest sympathy on his passing.”

In Faith: Jerry & Marion Pye

To all of Jim's family, I was truly saddened to hear of his passing . We shared many a chuckle together when worked at CFAD. He will missed greatly by not only his family but also his morning coffee buddies like Louie and the rest of the gang who always had a good banter. RIP my good friend. To the Hersey family,
I met Jim just under a month ago when I moved into my new place on Steed Court. Jim became a fast friend and one of the many incredible neighbours who so warmly welcomed me to my new neighbourhood. He came to visit me every day, always offering to help me with yard work and to share all his wonderful stories of his family and life. Though I didn’t know him long, he left me with warm memories, and I already miss seeing him daily at the back of my yard. I was with him when he had his stroke and did what I could to help. He was in good hands surrounded by love and caring. My deepest sympathy to all of you.
What a lovely man. ❤️
