MILLER, Jessie Elizabeth - If you are reading this, then Jessie may have touched your life as a grade one or two teacher at Alderney or Brookhouse schools; sat across from you at bridge; shared the dance floor with you; travelled with you; been a part of your community at Woodlawn United Church or Kiwanis; a client; a dear neighbour or friend; or a beloved family member. Jessie broke free of her pervasive aneurism on December 2, 2016. She was 98. Born in Nelson (Miramichi), NB May 7, 1918 to William and Florence (Parker) Appleby, Jessie was the oldest of four children. She was predeceased by her brother John and is loved deeply by sisters Florence Traer (Chatham, NB) and Evelyn Balfour (Alliston, ON). Jessie was introduced to her future husband, Barrie Miller, through the orchestration of the minister's wife at Moncton's Wesley Memorial United Church. They met in a play called "Aunt Tilley Goes To Sea" and shared life together for more than 64 years. Barrie passed April 2012. A move to Nova Scotia came in the early 60's with two children in hand. Jessie was predeceased by her son Brian and has been cared for in recent years by her daughter Marilyn. In addition to family, Jessie was passionate about education, politics, royalty and bridge. She read extensively on all four. While teaching she completed her BA and then Masters in Education from Saint Mary's University. We benefited from her education as every summer road trip was peppered with Jessie pointing out and providing background on the historical points of interest and rock formations. We may be sad that we can no longer share life with her, but Jessie left us lush with her influence and love. Her memory is imprinted on our souls. Jessie will be treasured by her daughter Marilyn Miller; daughter-in-law Nancy Ives; nieces and nephews Carolyn & St. John Blakeley; Ronnie Traer; Linda Davies & Arlene Hamilton; Billy, David, Charles, & Bruce Appleby; & other cherished family members. A testament to Jessie's strength and passion for life is her remarkable stroke journey. After 10 years of several strokes and gentle vascular dementia progression, it was the last 15 months of persistent seizures that finally robbed her of her mobility and ability. Her journey was eased by the wonderful care from Heather, Krista and Jean. The ladies of Northwood Homecare are also to be thanked for providing thoughtful personal care. Not enough can be said for the wonderful VON support, especially the care provided by Tammy Slaughter. By request there is no visitation. A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home is entrusted with Jessie's care. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, December 7, 12 noon, at Woodlawn United Church, Rev. Phillip Kennedy and Rev. Ivan Gregan officiating. A reception will be held after the service with burial in the spring. Family flowers only. If you would like, donations may be made to the VON or the Woodlawn United Church Accessibility Fund.
