

Of Dartmouth/Tarbot. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Marie (Murphy) Mombourquette, age 67, on January 30, 2018 in Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Florence (Gavin) Murphy. At the age of five, Joan moved to Cape Breton with her family, settling in Tarbot – the place she always called “Home”. Joan was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Baddeck. After her education at Baddeck Rural High School, Joan graduated from St. Martha’s Hospital, School of Nursing. Moving to Halifax and then later on to Dartmouth, she enjoyed her 39-year nursing career at the Victoria General Hospital, retiring a few years ago. Joan is survived by her loving husband, Brian Wayne; as well as her sister, Sarah Garland, Toronto, Ont.; brothers, Vernon, Truro; Albert (Demetrea), Hamilton, Ont.; and Wendell (Joan), Tarbot; sister-in-law, Brenda Murphy, Big Harbour. She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews, Sarah, Bernie, Jamie, Linda, Andrea, Peter, Carey Ann, Jamie, Richard, Patrick and Scott, as well as their families. Joan is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as her much-loved Mombourquette family. Surviving also is Joan’s wide circle of treasured friends and co-workers. Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her sister, Noreen; brother, Jimmy; foster brother, Johnny Power; nephew, Wally Garland; niece, Kelly Joan Murphy; brother-in-law, Billy Garland and sister-in-law, Jean Murphy. Joan was also predeceased by her very cherished mother-in-law, Mae Mombourquette and father-in-law, George. As per Joan’s request, cremation has taken place under the direction of A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Funeral Mass will take place at a later date from St. Michael’s Church, Baddeck, with Burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
