On February 23, 2026 Joan (Cake) Vallis passed peacefully away at her home at the age of 91 years. While the loss is deeply felt by her family we celebrate her happy and content 91 years of life. Joan was born January 24, 1935 in Lamaline, Newfoundland, daughter of Gilbert and Emily (Foote) Cake.
While at teachers training in St. John’s she met the love of her life , Leonard Vallis from Coombs Cove. Following teacher training in St. John's, she went to teach in Cox‘s Cove and then to Lamaline. Len’s teaching career was short and he soon went to Halifax to pursue business adventures and Joan joined him. Soon after they returned to Lamaline to be married and then back to Halifax to raise a family and enjoy 70 years of married life.
Throughout this time Joan loved to entertain and she hosted many food filled, fun times at their cottage on Piggott Lake, NS. Joan’s guests were sure to leave with full bellies and full hearts. Joan's connection with the Foote family of Lamaline was strong and evident throughout her life. She kept regular contact and dearly loved all the cousins and extended family. Joan and Len would travel to Newfoundland regularly to visit their beloved family in Coombs Cove, Lamaline and Conception Bay South.
Joan found employment in Halifax at Neima‘s jewellery store, her congenial personality, and her love for meeting people contributed to her success in this job for several years. Throughout her life she was an expert shopper with bargains searched for in any town, city or country that she visited. No store was overlooked and never a full price did she pay. When she wasn’t shopping for the bargains, Joan enjoyed years of bridge with many special friends.
Church played an important role in Joan's life and she was a dedicated member of her church’s Mothers Union for many years. She was devoted to her faith and dedicated to her family. Joan was the kind of person others wanted to be around. Consequently, she had numerous friends.
