MACLEAN, Katherine “Kay” Ruth - August 11, 1927- August 22, 2019 In Dartmouth, at 92 years, our dear mother has “gone west”. Kay was born in the old Pictou post office, the first child to the Postmaster, the late George and Muriel (Beer) McLean. Tempered and influenced by the challenges of growing up during the Depression and the Second World War made Kay resilient, self-reliant and a steadfast optimist. She never lost this exuberance. “I only drink champagne” was her light-hearted response when asked for her favourite drink—a zest for life in the company of good friends. If things were particularly excellent, she instructed us to “freeze the moment”. Our mother was an accomplished pianist at a young age and a fine artist, continuing to paint into her 80s. She was a fount of movie and music knowledge from the era of the big bands and the golden age of film. She followed her New York Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays with particular zeal-you dare not leave the room and disrupt her sports gods during a game! Her Dartmouth friends were a fundamental part of each day and incredibly important to her. Kay was involved in the community through her church, Stairs Memorial United, as a faithful IWK Children’s Hospital volunteer for over 40 years, and as a preschool teacher’s assistant. She cared deeply and made you feel special when you were with her. Engaged and engaging, Mum was always the centre of just about everything that happened in our family. Kay was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her seven children, Bruce (Janet Kavanagh), Heather (Phil) Webster, Scott, Robin (Doug) Christie, Janet MacKenzie, Grant (Janet), and Leslie (Blaise) Baxter; her sister Helen (Bill) Tower; 16 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; her nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Mum was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Guss, her brother and sister-in-law Frank and Eva (Connell) McLean and grandchild Andrew Webster. Our family wishes to thank Drs. Steele, Morrison and staff at the Cole Harbour Medical Centre for their long standing support and care for our mother. Arrangements have been made through A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home in Dartmouth. At her request, there will be no visitation or service. Interment will be in Seaview Cemetery, Pictou, at a later date. Memorial donations in Kay’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be viewed or sent to: www.mattatallfuneralhome.com.

Dear Bruce, Heather, Scott, Robin, Janet, Grant and Leslie,
We wanted to send a message to let you know how sad we were to hear about your Mom’s passing. What an indelible mark she left on all of your lives! The obituary captured so beautifully her lovely spirit and the legacy she left to all of you. What wonderful memories you have!
Kay was such a dear friend to Mom and their time living at the same address on Anchor Drive was so special to Mom (not to mention their friendship spanning many decades before that). I have fun memories of gatherings of the Pictou gals at our home on 1756 Beech St. when we kids would sit at the top of the stairs and listen to them laugh and have a good time. Such sweet images...
I hope that in time you will all find peace and comfort in sharing YOUR special memories of her.
With fondness,
Shelagh Campbell-Palmer and Ailene Campbell

MacLean Family,
I just wanted to pass on my sincere sympathies to you all. Your sweet Mom, grandmom and great grandmom was a true lady. She was and will always be someone who brings a smile to my face when I think of her. Her spunk for life was incredible. Your words in her obituary are heartfelt. My wish is for us all to live life as she did. Thinking of you all.

To all my cousins, your beautiful Mom will be truly missed. We all so dearly loved seeing her when she was in Calgary for visits. She was such a wonderful story teller who was so detail oriented and often had us all in hysterics with her terrific sense of humour.

She will be missed greatly, but remembered fondly because we all recall how precious a lady she was in every way.

God Bless,
Love Skye

I was a late-comer to the family, having married her nephew almost 20 years ago. Kay and I found ourselves table-mates at a few family get-togethers over these years. I felt as if I had always been a part of the wonderfully warm McLean family when in her presence. She was a rare gem of a human being. I will always keep her in my heart, as I do all of her children, and extended family.

My sincere condolences to the MacLean family on the loss of their wonderful mother and grandmother. I have many fond memories of Kay, who often welcomed me into her home and was forever charming and gracious. Kay also enjoyed a good story and a bit of mischief. She was incapable of being dull. xoxo
