The family of the late Mae Florence Todd née King (Williams) are saddened to announce her passing on May 1, 2025, at Veteran’s Memorial, Halifax, NS where she resided the past four years. She was five days shy of her 100th birthday. Mom was born and raised in Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, NS, the daughter of the late Florence and Harry King.
Mom worked as a telephone operator in the Army during World War 11. She met her first husband, Alton Williams, and moved to Ostrea Lake, NS, where they built their home and started a family.
After the tragic death of Alton, age 36, Mom eventually met and married Roy Everett Todd and moved to Dartmouth, NS.
Once we all left home, Mom went to work at the Dartmouth Senior Service Center where she was Director of Volunteer Services, a position she thoroughly enjoyed for 15 years. Many friendships were forged through these years.
Mom was a member of Emmanuel Church, Dartmouth, where she was a member of the choir and served on the Altar Guild. After Emmanuel closed, mom joined the congregation of St. Andrews Anglican Church, Dartmouth.
As the heart and soul of our family, mom loved nothing more than to gather with her “crew” to celebrate holidays, birthdays, and family time. All of these usually involved her wonderful cooking and homemade pie.
Mom was a lifelong learner, always eager to try new things like guitar playing, dancing and singing. Her hobbies were many, including reading, knitting, sewing, cooking, and time spent with friends and family. She loved travelling. Her travels took her across Canada, throughout the US as well as the Caribbean. She and Roy enjoyed their many travels with their trailer, joining her brother Ralph and sister-in-law/ best friend Rodney King on trips.
True to her Cape Breton roots, mom would often inquire of those she met if they were from Cape Breton. Many chats were the result, and she loved nothing more than telling others how proud she was to be from Cape Breton.
She is survived by her children Bill (Claire) Williams, Rocky Harbour N.L., Brenton (Patricia) Williams, Dartmouth, NS, Geraldine Williams-Borne (Ron Borne) Amherst, NS, Linda Todd (Clark Malcolm) Dartmouth, NS, special Daughter Marion (the late Bill Savolainen) Ottawa, Ont., as well as her grandchildren Chris (Donna) Williams, Sheet Harbour, NS, and Ellen Williams (Reagan Seidler) Toronto, Ontario, her brother Ralph King, Bras d’Or, Cape Breton and Wilfred King of Bras d’Or, Cape Breton. She was predeceased by her first husband Alton Williams, her second husband Roy Todd, son Bruce Williams, brothers Art, Ernie, and Bill King.
We would like to thank the staff of 4 West, Veterans Memorial, in particular Kirstin and Laura who continually engaged mom in the recreation activity program, playing floor hockey, lexicon, exercise, and outings.
Visitation will take place at Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, NS on May 7, 2025 from 7 pm to 9 pm. A celebration of life will be held May 8th at 11 am at Mattatall Funeral Home, with a reception to follow at Mattatall.
Internment will be in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. (family only).
Donations honouring mom can be made to St. Andrews Anglican Church, Locks Rd., Dartmouth or The North Grove, 115-6 Primrose St. Dartmouth, NS
