MACKINNON (Atkins), Margaret Frances – 92, died suddenly at her home on March 29, 2014. Born in Halifax on April 22, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Harry Roy and “Kitty” Atkins. For Margaret, music always provided a beautiful symphony to her life from a young girl who played piano on a radio talent show, Uncle Mels, alongside Hank Snow, to concerts during the war, for family get-togethers, to her sunset years at The Berkeley where she played old time favourites for many a singsong. Margaret graduated from both Halifax Academy and the Royal Conservatory of Music. In her early years, she was a court reporter, moved on to teach dressmaking at the Halifax Vocational School, teach music years later in the Amherst School System, and finally provide music lessons privately when she and her husband retired to Prince Edward Island. When not “tickling the ivories”, Margaret immersed herself in both the community and her children’s extracurricular activities. She was in the CGIT, was a Girl Guide Commissioner, member of the Crystal Chapter, Easter Star, deeply involved in the Rotary Club & Shriners with her husband for many years, and active in the church and recreational sports teams throughout her life. Margaret loved to entertain and was always ahead of the curve when it came to dressing not only herself but her family and being a seamstress allowed her to whip up an outfit for many occasions, with matching shoes and jewellery, of course! Quick to participate in a practical joke, always ready to don a costume for a party, play a round of bridge or be part of a cabaret, Margaret was never one to be idle. Even when macular degeneration impaired her sight and her soul mate, Raymond, passed away, she continued to sail, ride a sea do, enjoy trips to Ireland and Disney with her children/grandchildren, learn to use a computer and at 90 was an inspirational speaker for the Vision Canada Conference in Halifax. She is survived by her daughters Lynn Boothroyd (Andrew), Orleans, ONT; Rae Owen (Mike), Dartmouth, NS; Anne MacKinnon(Chris Moir), W. Porter’s Lake,NS; son Ian MacKinnon(Carol), Port Williams,NS ; sister Dunny Fitzgerald (Paddy), Dartmouth, NS; brothers Carl Atkins, Dartmouth NS; James Atkins, Halifax, NS; sister-in-law, Marian Dietz, Red Deer, AB; grandchildren, Allison Fitzgerald (Jason); Orleans, ONT; Adrienne Boothroyd (Ian Dawes), Ottawa, ONT; Ceri Owen, Kentville, NS; Dr. Meredith Owen(Neil Frizzo), Kemps Creek, Australia; Fraser Moir(Emily), Bedford, NS; Logan Moir, Halifax, NS; Sarah and Calum MacKinnon, Port Williams, NS and four great grandchildren, Rhys and Kian Fitzgerald and Erin and Alistair Dawes. Thinking of you … Lynn, Rae, Anne, Ian, and all the Family … even though we are apart through Space and even though our paths have not crossed too often through Time, our Lives are entwined, and I'm very thankful to Aunt Margaret for this special bond. She was, and still IS, a remarkable Soul and I'm totally blessed that SHE is in my Clan.

I hope to make a physical connection with some of you again, one of these days.

Much love to you all ...

Remembering a gracious and sweet lady. I had the pleasure of knowing Margaret while my mother was a resident at the Berkeley for two years. I was from the eastern shore not far from where her relatives had lived in Harrigan Cove. I always enjoyed my chats with her. She had such a zest for life. May she rest in peace.

I just finished looking at all the beautiful slide show pictures twice. My favorite picture of Margaret as a young girl was the one where she wore a mustard yellow sweater, with matching bracelet and earrings. She was sitting back on and her head turned with this oh so cute upsweep hair do. Very, Very pretty. It was a pleasure and honor to know you margaret. You have left wonderful memories that will forever be. David and Yvonne

About 75 years ago , Margaret taught me to play "God Save the King:" on her piano. I still can play it but that is the only piece that I can play on the piano. Obviously, Margaret was a good teacher. We will miss her annual Christmas phone calls here in Burlington, On.
