

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Margery on April 12th at the age of 87. Born in Dartmouth, Marmy as she was know to many, was the daughter of Claude Hills Morris - former mayor of Dartmouth and Norma Gentles Morris. Marmy graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1954 and practised medicine in Dartmouth until her retirement in 2000. She served as the first woman Medical Officer for Dartmouth from 1955 until 1970. She was the Medical Advisor for the first Canadian Summer Games in 1969. Throughout her career she served with numerous organizations : Medical Advisory Board of the Dartmouth Victorian Order of Nurses ; Founding Member of the Board of Directors of the Dartmouth YM-YWCA; Member of the Board of Directors for Dartmouth / Halifax Big Brothers Assoc.; Atlantic Child Guidance Center; Dartmouth Branch of The Canadian Cancer Society; Dartmouth Mental Health Association. She was a former member of the Dartmouth Civil Defence Committee, the NS Disability Pension Review Board, and the Dartmouth Gyrette Club. She served as Chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the first 3 Greenville High School Reunions and is a member of Doctor’s Nova Scotia, Canadian Medical Association, St. James United Church, Alpha Gamma Delta International Fraternity. She was entered into the registry of Dartmouth’s Memorable Women in 1994. She was an accomplished pianist, ,singer and a YoYo Champion. She married William George Oakley in 1955 and they spent 48 years together until he passed in 2004. They both loved to travel as was evidenced by their annual trips to all corners of the world. Margery is survived by her 2 daughters Sandra Oakley-Andrews ( Paul ) Dartmouth and Jo-Ann Oakley-Stewart ( Joel ) Parrish Fl.; her brother Bill Morris ( Donna ) Dartmouth and many nieces and nephews. We would like to thank everyone who took such good care of Mum these past few years including our neighbours who were always watching out for her, her medical team and in the past year Dr. Sophie Couture and the nurses and caregivers at Drummond Hall.
Visitation will be from 6-9pm on Monday April 17th with a funeral service at 1pm Tuesday April 18th both in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St. Rev. Kevin Little Officiating. Family burial to follow at Mount Hermon Cemetery.
