

Toohey, Margery J. (Hill)-of Dartmouth. It is with great sadness that the family of Margery Jean (Hill) Toohey announce her death after a most courageous battle with cancer, at the Queen Elizabeth Health Sciences Centre in Halifax on June 22, 2014. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton on April 5, 1940, Margery was the eldest daughter of the late Guy and Jean (Meagher) Hill of Dartmouth. She attended public school in Dartmouth, then Halifax Vocational School, following which she worked for CFB Shearwater as a stenographer, and then for the Dean of Faculty at Dalhousie University, and later for the Baptist Hospital Chaplaincy for many years. Margery also spent two years in Montreal working for Reader’s Digest from 1961-1963 and lived in Oakville, ON from 1980-1984 where she worked in a dental office. Margery was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Dartmouth, where she sang in the choir for many years, was an active member of the Ladies Circle and was one of the founding members of the Bell Choir. She was also a past Vice Regent of the Fairfield Chapter of the IODE of Dartmouth. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Kenneth Toohey; her children Sandra (Max) Chauvin, Susan (David) Friesen, and Stephen (Kathy Woods), all of Dartmouth; as well as her dear grandchildren, Joshua and Emma Toohey and Matthew Friesen; sisters, Karen (John) Pearce, of Dartmouth and Dorothy (Gordon) Craig, of Ottawa; aunt, Frances Brown, New Germany; and by several cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth on Thursday, June 26 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Dartmouth on Friday, June 27 at 2pm. Rev. Martin Zwicker officiating. Interment will take place at St. Andrew’s United Church Cemetery in Elderbank at a later date. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
