McCarthy, Nancy Patricia – 64, of Dartmouth, beloved daughter of the late Gerald and Pat (Hutchinson) McCarthy, passed away at home during Christmas week. Born in Halifax, she moved to Dartmouth with her family when she was 4 and lived there most of her life. Nancy attended Prince Andrew High School and worked at a number of jobs, including at a hotel, a law firm, a car dealership, and a lumber business. For a while, she ran a convenience store, managed a bookstore in Toronto, and also managed the food service at the historic Citadel. Her happiest times were those spent with her many friends and extended family, especially when engaged in the two great passions of her life, music and theatre. She played piano and guitar and sang from her school days forward. In her 20s, she began her heavy involvement with theatre. She helped to start performance groups, wrote scripts, and acted, including a well-received amateur performance in Vanities on the Neptune Theatre stage. For decades, she was a sought-after stage manager in community theatre, and she stage-managed professionally in B.C. for a year. In later years, she was an increasingly indispensable help to her parents at home as they grew older, looking after housework, shopping and medications, among other things. After her mother died, she was her father's house manager, chauffeur, record keeper and companion. She took care of him after a serious fall until his death following a stroke in October. She is survived by her brother Michael, of Dartmouth. There will be a celebration of Nancy's life, followed by a reception, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home on Portland Street. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Nancy’s memory to a charity of your choice.
