Age 93. Following a courageous battle with old age, our beloved mother, Phyllis Hill (nee Dynes) passed away peacefully, on 2nd August. Born in Lurgan N. Ireland in 1927 her family immigrated to Montreal, in 1928. She was predeceased by her parents Ralph Dynes MBE and Isobell (Long) siblings Frederick (d. France 1944), Patricia Cascarano (Fred) and Kenneth Dynes.
Married in 1949 to a naval officer Phyllis moved to Nova Scotia in 1951 where she started a family. Phyllis is survived by her son Geoffrey Hill (Wanda) and daughter Margot Williams, of Dartmouth. Also, by her grandchildren Claire (Alain) and Chris Williams (Chrystal), Graham (Penny) and Andrew (Heather) Hill and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece Linda Taylor (Harry) and nephew Wayne Cascarano (Rejane).
As a proud Nova Scotian Phyllis celebrated her Irish heritage. She took great pride in her family’s accomplishments and was always ready for a family trip to Montreal, Calgary or Dieppe.
Phyllis led a busy life as a working mother. She was a much loved and trusted family matriarch. She gave freely of her time and gave valuable advice. Phyllis always put others needs ahead of her own and when she was needed, she was always there. Her home was always open for family member sleep overs followed by a hearty breakfast. She was independent and strong willed. Family members appreciated her strawberry jam, Christmas fruit cakes and knitted items. Phyllis enjoyed watching NFL football games.
In later years she contributed to the ACW at St Andrew’s Church in Cole Harbour. She was a founding member of the St. Andrew’s Belles often performing in her eighties, at nursing homes, and church events. She was an accomplished poet and spent days getting a poem just right.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration will be planned in the near future. She was greatly comforted by her friends Bev, Carrie, Sheila, Ray, Marg, dear friend Barb Rand and members of her church to whom our family is most appreciative. We would also like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Dartmouth General Hospital. Any donations in her memory may be made to the DGH Foundation or the Dartmouth SPCA.
