He was ordained a priest on June 25, 1951 and served the parish of Maitland until 1954. Arthur was appointed to the Parish of Westphal and remained at St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Dartmouth until his retirement in 1988. Throughout his years at St. Luke’s he was instrumental in developing a small church into a striving suburban parish where he mentored 23 divinity students, including the Most Rev. Fred Hiltz, Primate of Canada.
During his active years in the Dartmouth area Arthur served the church and community diligently. Throughout his active ministry he held countless memberships on many committees of the Diocese of Nova Scotia and the community at large. After retirement in 1988 he held the position as the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator of Oceanview Manor; Chaplain to the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires of Nova Scotia for over 20 years; Chaplain of the West Nova Scotia Militia District and Area Chaplin. Pastoral ministry for Arthur provided opportunity to express human compassion and concern to people in many walks of life. He was deeply devoted to the needs of the sick and suffering and was involved with the provision and development of palliative care in the Dartmouth General Hospital and nursing homes in the community. In retirement he developed a keen interest in woodworking, an active hobby he truly enjoyed.
