

We are saddened to announce the death of Roy Ernest Gilroy, Dartmouth, N.S. who passed away on the 3rd day of September 2022 at the VG Hospital at the age of 94.
Born in Springhill, N.S. on August 6th, 1928 he was the son of the late Ernest and Louise Gilroy. Educated in Springhill, he attended Mount Allison University, graduated with a B.A. and taught in Black River, Kings Co. in a two room school as teacher and principal before attending Dalhousie University receiving a B. Ed. He then taught in Parrsboro, Cumberland County and for the next thirty-five years was a teacher and principal in the Dartmouth School System.
He was an active member of Stairs Memorial United Church, a faithful member of the choir for over sixty years, a member of the Session where he served as chairman of the Worship Committee for twenty years, a member of the Board of Stewards and later as a member of the Unified Board.
He was a charter member of the Dartmouth Choral Society. He had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke. His favorite passtime was playing Bridge. After his retirement he and Shirley, his wife of 65 years, travelled widely visiting faraway places such as Spain, Paris, Hawaii, Oberammergau. They spent many winters in Port Richey, Florida. He was a dedicated volunteer working with Meals on Wheels, the Dartmouth Seniors Service Centre, the Cancer Society and U.N.I.C.E.F.
He is survived by his daughter Annette (Bill) Dartmouth, sons Richard (Donna) Tatamagouche, Michael (Pamela) Greenfield, Daniel (Kelly) Wainwright Alberta. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Daniels), brothers, Lawrence, Donald and Carvel, and sister Doris. He had 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Stairs Memorial United Church, Hester Street, Dartmouth on September 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Because of Covid, there was no service for Shirley, so there will be a joint service for both Roy and Shirley with Rev. Catherine MacDonald officiating. Reception following the service in the Church Hall. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Stairs Memorial United Church Memorial fund or to any charity. A private burial will take place in Rodney, Springhill at a later date.
