OBITUARY

Sarah "Jean" Haines

January 15, 1934August 7, 2019

Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 7, 2019 in Dartmouth General Hospital after a long illness.

Born Sarah Dyke in St. John’s NL, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Marion (Thistle) and Abrahm Dyke of St. John’s.

Educated at Bishop Spencer College, Jean pursued academics and school sports with an unbridled passion. After graduating, she was employed at the Newfoundland House of Assembly, where she excelled at many positions.

Her journey to the mainland started after she met and married Frank Haines where they arrived in Riverview NB with their four daughters.

Always an engaged member of the community, Jean was very active in all areas of her faith, including being a Girl Guide leader, ladies’ auxiliary member and choir member.

A passionate lover of singing and music, Jean was a stalwart member of The Aeolian Singers, where she loved performing and travelling abroad with the group when they toured.

In the early days of Mic Mac Mall Jean took part time employment at Robert Simpson Company in the shoe department, where she was a very valued employee and had many friends on staff.

Retirement was always busy with church involvement, following the progress of her grandchildren and helping Frank in the garden and with his many projects.

She and Frank loved travelling, especially to Europe and the British Isles which they often enjoyed up until the time of Frank’s illness.

A move to Parkland in 2012 saw Jean make many friends and become the resident ‘’cards games ‘’ instructor to many of the residents. She worked at the canteen, and enjoyed being a member of the ‘’Lunch Bunch ‘’ Laterally, she loved making biscuits and distributing fudge to her neighbors and friends.

She is survived by her daughters Lynn (Malcolm) Macpherson, Valley, NS, Renee Haines, Debbie (David) Stevens of Dartmouth and grandchildren Andrew Macpherson, Nancy Woodward (Cale Matheson), Peter Woodward (Elanna) Carolyn Stevens and Sarah Stevens, also great-grandson Jake. She was predeceased by husband Frank, daughter Carol and brothers Gordon and Max.

The family would like to express a huge thank you to the staff members of Parkland at The Lakes for their friendship and compassion. Also, much gratitude to the medical staff on the cardiac wing at Dartmouth General Hospital these past months.

Our sincere condolences to all the family. Your mom always had a smile on her face for everyone, and was a great singer in our choir at the Church of the Holy Spirit. May God bless you all.

There is nothing like Sunday meals at Jean’s house. A couple of memories. Watching her perform at the Nova Scotia Tattoo and the time she had very old childhood friends over to her home. She always seemed so motherly and serious but on this one occasion she was in the kitchen with her friends and it was like a sleep-over at around 10pm. All I heard were howls of laughter coming from the kitchen.

I hope she is playing cards and laughing with friends in heaven. Rest In Peace, Jean.
