Shirley Ann Matthews

MATTHEWS, Shirley Ann - passed away peacefully at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish, on March 5, 2023. Born in Grand Falls, NL to the late Charles and Blanche Frew, Shirley attended McGill University in Montreal, Que., and Acadia University in Wolfville, NS.

Shirley worked at the Pathology Lab at the VG in Halifax, NS as a Lab Technician and subsequently as Lab Supervisor until her retirement.

Shirley enjoyed family travel and searching for antique treasures over the years.

Shirley was predeceased by her ex husband Robert Matthews; and live-in close friend, Doris Brandenberger; daughter-in-law, Rose Matthews (Hughes); brothers-in-law Fred Bradbrook, and Gerry Burrows.

Shirley is survived by her son Paul (Cheryl), daughter Bonni Matthews-Hawboldt (Tom); sisters, Kay Bradbrook (Fred)(Peter Coady); and Betty Burrows (Gerry); grandchildren; Edward Matthews; Desiree Theriault (Gilles); Jeffrey Hawboldt (Annik Ethier), and Kimberly Viau (Marc); great-grandchildren Sierra Hastings; Isabella Matthews; Augustina Hawboldt; Eva Viau; great-great grandchild Charlee Rose Hastings; and many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank Shirley’s family doctor, Dr. Steve Gallant, and the Staff at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for their care of and compassion for Shirley. We would also like to thank the staff at The Maples for welcoming and assisting Shirley, and making her feel at home for the short time she was there.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 14 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth, at 2:00pm. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Food Bank or Bide Awhile animal shelter or St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.
