Steve was born October 8, 1953 in Halifax to parents James (Jim) and Shirley Hatcher (née McNutt). The family, including elder brother Greg and younger sister Wendy, lived in Dartmouth. In his youth, Steve was a proud member of the army cadets where he rose to ranks of Cadet Major of the Halifax Rifles and Lieutenant of the Cadet Corps. It was also during this time that Steve discovered his lifelong passion for vehicle mechanics and restoration. No matter the condition of the car or what was missing from it, Steve could fix it: he could take a rusted frame and steering wheel out of a field and finish with a car that looked like it was on display in the showroom of a dealership the year it was released.
Steve took a job as an accountant trainee at Royal Bank of Canada when he was 19 years old. This job would turn into a career spanning 41-years managing branches all over the Atlantic Provinces and travelling in different roles he held during his tenure before retiring as Regional Manager of Atlantic Network Distribution and Optimization in October, 2013. Steve became well known in RBC as a problem solver and a man who could get things done, frequently assisting, consulting, and advising senior and junior members of the bank. He was the recipient of multiple honours and awards, but most important to him was the trust and respect of his peers. During his career Steve volunteered with The Rotary Club and Scouts Canada, and in his retirement put his focus and skills into his volunteer efforts sitting on numerous boards and chairs in committees for The Owl’s Club, Dartmouth Non-Profit Housing Society, and he reconnected with the Halifax Rifles executive to honor his earlier life’s involvement, and for the memory of his father. In his retirement Steve also travelled extensively to a number of destinations all over the world to see first hand places t he read about, that fascinated him, and that were just beautiful to the eye after a lifetime of hard work and service.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Julia (Jill) Taylor (née Bishop), sons Stephen (Jennifer), Rodney (Gillian), Travis, and six grandchildren (Sadie, Penny, Kelsey, Noah, Jack, and Gavin).
