Courtney, Violet Barbara "Joan" 86, of Dartmouth Nova Scotia passed away at home, peacefully and with dignity, Saturday January 3, 2015 surrounded by her devoted, loving children who had the privilege to care for her in her final days. Born September 23, 1928 in Springdale, Newfoundland, Joan attended Prince of Wales College, St. John's before graduating from the Children's Hospital School of Nursing in Halifax, completing the RN program. Joan was a nurse and supervisor at the Children's Hospital, later the IWK, prior to moving later in her career to the Halifax Shipyards as an occupational health and safety nurse. Joan was predeceased by her parents Chesley and Mary Clarke (ne Moore), and sisters Evelyn, Edna and Audrey. Mom's much loved husband, our dad, Thomas Francis Courtney, predeceased her as well.
Her children survive her: Judith Winarski (Daniel Winarski) Waterloo, Thomas Courtney (Carolyn Courtney) Orleans, Dr. Robert Courtney (Jennifer Cantley) Dartmouth, Captain Peter Courtney (Beverly Hatt) Greenwood, David Courtney (Carol Anne Cox) Dartmouth, Elizabeth Courtney (Reynald Goguen) Hatchet Lake, Jane Courtney (Christopher Evans) New York.
Adored grandchildren Brendan, Peter, Drew, Allison, Thomas, Emma, Charlotte, Sara, Jane, Aden, Connor, Lauren and Griffin are missing their Nanny, as well as her new great granddaughter Eve, whom she cooed over in pictures.
Our family would like to extend our appreciation to Dr. Mallery and the PATH program for guiding us in Mom's care.
Extended family, friends and neighbours, provided tremendous support and empathy throughout this process and their kindness was felt daily.
No doubt Mom was very pleased indeed to have all her children together, supporting her and each other.
She always referred to her children as her best friends. The feelings are mutual.
In lieu of flowers, please provide a donation to World Vision , which Mom did for many years or a charity that has meaning to you.
Mom's wishes were to be cremated. A quiet family celebration of mom's life will occur a later date.
