Alan E. Meyer, 65, of Davenport, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Alan graduated from Davenport Central High school, and was a member of the 1970 State Championship Basketball team. He settled into a career as a pipefitter, eventually becoming the Business Agent for the Plumbers and Pipefitters local union in Davenport and Rock Island. But Alan’s life is best portrayed not by accomplishments, or titles, but by an endearing quality that touched all he met. He had a sense of humor and a light-hearted approach to life, never seeing a burden that couldn’t be lightened. He never met a stranger, for he approached everyone he encountered as a friend, and instantly they became one. Alan was fiercely loyal, unwavering in his support and affection for those whose lives intermingled with his, with love as their bond. Alan may have lost the battle with cancer that ended his life, but it could not take away his indomitable spirit that lives on in each and every one of us. Alan requested a memorial service of a different nature than what we are familiar with. Instead of a gathering at a specific time and place, Alan asks that we remember him in our daily lives by being kind. Each act of kindness multiplies itself through paying it forward, moving us all closer to a kinder and gentler world. Alan believed that, and lived his life around that belief. He wishes for that to be our memorial to him. Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Doris (Anderson) Meyer and Frank Meyer. Those family members left to carry on includes, sister, Alice Martin and brother, Mark C. (Elizabeth) Meyer, seven nephews and nieces, and numerous great-nephews and nieces. Alan also leaves behind many friends whose love for him was a support and comfort throughout his life. If he had last words to speak, they would be, “Thank you.”
