Al was born on April 15, 1929, to Waldo and Viola (Bolte) Korthaus on a farm in rural Walcott. He graduated from Durant High School in 1948. He married Jeanette Keppy at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, on January 23, 1955. They shared 70 years of marriage and memories. Together, Al and Jeanette farmed and raised their family northwest of Walcott. Their farm was honored as a century farm and a heritage farm and remains in the family today. They retired in Davenport in 1993.
Al was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, which included serving with the 25th Infantry Division in Korea. He was privileged to have gone on the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities in 2014. Also, in 2013 he was presented with a Quilt of Valor by the Mississippi Valley Quilters Guild.
Al was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was active in various community organizations. He was a member of the Walcott American Legion Post 548 as well as a charter member of the German American Heritage Center. He was a 4-H leader and served on the board of the Durant Athletic Boosters. Al also served as clerk of Cleona Township Board of Trustees and as a board member of Scott County A.S.C. He served as president of the Scott County Pork Producers, and as secretary-treasurer of the Walcott Elevator.
Always a man of the soil, after he retired, he took as much pride in his lawn and landscaping as he had in his years in farming. He was a natural craftsman/handyman and talented woodcrafter, sharing many pieces with family and friends.
Al is survived by his wife, Jeanette; three children, Jolene (Daniel) Harvey of Davenport, Glen (Deborah) Korthaus of Walcott, and Ellen (John) Vos of Leawood, Kansas. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Emily Harvey, Philip Harvey, Grant (Amanda) Korthaus. Garret (Emily) Korthaus, and Alex Vos. There are also four great-grandchildren: Logan, Leah, Weston and Dean Korthaus.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, his identical twin brother Ervin, his brother Wilbert (Marvella) Korthaus, and his sister Verna (Roland) Paulsen. He was also preceded in death by his father and mother in-law, Henry and Norma Keppy, and in-laws Velma (Ted) Arp, Alfred (Jean) Keppy, Henry (Louise) Keppy, and William Keppy.
