It is with deep love and profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend, Bambi, who left this world on November 27, surrounded by those who adored her.
Bambi was born in Astoria, Oregon on May 23, 1944 to David and Virginia (Carlson) Spencer. She graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1962 and Iowa State University in 1966, with a degree in Early Childhood Development. She married her high school sweetheart, Glen Mitchell, in 1967. Bambi was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, Cub Scout leader, and her sons’ biggest sports and music fan. Though she initially only planned to work outside the home until she had saved enough money “to buy a curio cabinet”, she went on to work thirty years at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 2013.
Bambi was the heart of her family—steady, selfless, and endlessly generous—and her absence leaves a space no one else could ever fill. Her smile could light up a room, and everyone who knew her felt the brightness of her spirit.
Family and traditions were everything to Bambi. From Friday movie nights with “the grandmas”, to indoor picnics, summer vacations in Minnesota, and Swedish dinner on Christmas Eve, she cherished every moment that brought her family together. Bambi was a wonderful cook and huge Iowa State and 49ers football fan. She enjoyed hosting game days and cheering on her teams. She also loved country music, especially Willie Nelson. She attended several of his concerts over the years, and even got to meet him in person.
Of all her roles in life, being “Grandma Bambi” to her twin grandsons was her greatest joy. She adored them beyond measure, celebrating every milestone, every laugh, and turning even the simplest moments into cherished memories.
Bambi was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her children, Bret (Sharon Dyrkacz) Mitchell and Bron (Kristan) Mitchell, grandsons, Aron Mitchell and Cole Mitchell, “co-grandma”, Cheri Oliver, and special cousins, Richard (Vicky) Hansen, Joann (Dick) DeGrood, and Scott Hansen. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing she is now at peace. Her love and light will remain with us always as a lasting legacy that continues to shine.
A service to honor her life will be held on Tuesday, December 2 at 11:00 am at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport, Iowa. The family will greet friends and relatives from 4:00 - 6:30 pm on Monday, December 1.
