Bettie was born April 2, 1930 in Missouri to Lois and Everett Ross. She grew up in Muscatine Iowa, in a household that loved music and movies. She loved singing, dancing, and acting and played Juliet in her high school play at Muscatine High School.
Also in Muscatine, she met her husband, Stanley Freyermuth. Bettie and Stanley often sang together in their church choir as young people. They were married on September 3, 1948, and enjoyed 67 years of marriage.
Bettie was a devoted mother to her only daughter, Susanne, and eagerly jumped in to help with youth activities, especially the Girl Scouts and the church youth group. She also volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital (Genesis), the Broadway Theatre League, and Masonic Groups. She served for some years as national leader of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and was a member of Daughters of the Nile and Eastern Star. She traveled extensively and never failed to see a play in any place she had a chance.
In recent years, Bettie was housebound by illness, but treasured her family, her two little dogs, and her extended family, the Maxwell’s, next door.
She is survived by her daughter, Susanne Watson Epting, (Christopher Epting), of Davenport, and her grandson, Andrew Watson of New York City. She was preceded in death by her husband and her grandson, Matthew. Bettie’s family wishes to thank the staff at Clarissa Cook for their compassionate care.
Memorials may be made to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com.
