Carol was born on January 22, 1937, in Rock Island, Illinois to Donald and Carmen Coward. She was united in marriage to James “Jim” Schadt on August 14, 1953, in Davenport, IA. They were blessed to be married for 52 years and raised four children. Their life together was filled with many adventures from traveling, living overseas, raising, and showing champion Bassett Hounds, and shared a love for dogs. Jim preceded her in death on September 9, 2005.
Carol began another chapter in her life by marrying A. Greg Gutgsell on January 28, 2007. During their 16 years of marriage, they enjoyed traveling together, attending church services, and dining out with friends. He preceded her in death on October 5, 2022.
Family and friends will remember Carol as a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother with a kind and generous heart. Carol found joy in family and grandchildren, reading, spending time in her gardens, travelling and shopping. Carol had a genuine spiritual love, and we know she is now in a place of peace; however, with her passing she leaves a large void in the hearts of all who loved and cherished her.
Carol is survived by her children; Gina Schadt of Austin, TX, Joseph (Anita) Schadt of Rock Island, IL, Annette (Robert) Beckwith of Jefferson, GA, Joni (Matt) Ketelaar of Davenport, IA; grandchildren, Jason Schadt, Jessica Gronewold, Madison Zemba, Emily Crawley, Rob Beckwith, Caleb Beckwith, Laura Beth Beckwith, Maddie Corapi, Luke Ketelaar, Ben Ketelaar, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, James Schadt; second husband, A. Greg Gutgsell, and her brother, William Coward.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of The Fountains for their loving care while Carol resided at the community.
