Carrie Alice Olson, 102, of Davenport, passed away Friday, July 19, 2013 at Crest Health Care. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Rural Calamus, IA. Visitation will be one half hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be in Our Savior’s Kvindherred Cemetery, Rural Calamus, IA. Memorials may be made to her church. Online condolences may be shared at www.rungemortuary.com.
Carrie was born on December 29, 1910 in Calamus, IA, the daughter of Peter and Bertha Olson. She was a sister of Gladys, Eveline, Mildred, Beatrice and Edwin.
She went to Iowa State Teachers University in Cedar Falls (now UNI) and received a Two Year Teaching Degree and then graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL with a Teaching Degree. She did additional Graduate Study at Drake University and Western Illinois University. Carrie organized and taught the first Kindergarten class in Alta, IA (1934) and organized and taught the first Kindergarten class in West Liberty, IA. Following that she taught Kindergarten in Rock Island, IL. She retired from teaching in 1976 after teaching Kindergarten for 42 years. Through much of her teaching career Carrie occupied leadership positions in state and local professional organizations, including serving in an advisory capacity in the development of the Illinois Kindergarten curriculum. Survivors include two nephews, Paul Hoff, Eau Claire, WI and Peter Mitchell, Fulton, IL and two nieces, Janice (Mitchell) Lutz, Fremont, NE and Marilyn (Hoff) Freeze, Topeka, KS.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
