Cremation rites have been accorded. The family will greet friends from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Thursday, November 6, 2025, at The Runge Mortuary & Crematory Davenport. Masonic services will follow at 6:00pm in the Runge Chapel. Burial of his ashes will be with his wife in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital. Charlie was born in Monroe, Iowa on April 3, 1934, to Ray and Hazel (Rinehart) Shaffer. He graduated from Monroe Public Schools, followed by a BA in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa University in 1956. After service in the Army, he earned an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University. He settled in Davenport and was employed by the Rock Island Arsenal for 35 years, retiring in 1994. Charlie married Phyllis Grant on June 17, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2013.
His memberships included Brubaker #675 Masonic Lodge, Davenport Consistory and KAABA Shrine. He enjoyed NASCAR, taking fishing trips, woodworking & carving, was a voracious reader, and puzzles and mind teasers.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth Shaffer of Bettendorf, and a daughter, Nancy Shaffer of Davenport.
