Cheryl spent 34 dedicated years at the Rock Island Arsenal, where she was not just a colleague but a friend to many. Her talents weren't limited to her professional life; she famously bowled a perfect 300 game, earning her the Quad City Times sports page headline, "Gapinski is Perfect." It was a moment of pure joy that she cherished, and one she enjoyed recounting with a grin.
To know Cheryl was to experience a life filled with warmth, humor, and generosity. She was known to enjoy a margarita with friends, always ready to laugh and find the fun in life. Though she lived her last 18 years with MS and was bedridden for the last 3 years, she approached each day with a smile, ready to enjoy a good joke, and arms open wide for a hug.
Cheryl was predeceased by her husband, Steven Van Besien, and her father Roland Gapinski, she is survived by her loving family: her mother, Pat Gapinski, her brothers, Ron (Cindy) and Greg (Debra) Gapinski, her Aunt Mary Goulet, a niece Amber and nephews Ranger and Wayne. They, along with countless friends, will miss her vivacious spirit and the joy she brought into their lives.
In line with Cheryl's wishes, there will be no formal service or visitation. Instead, we will honor her with a Celebration of Life party, where friends and family can gather to share stories, laughter, and perhaps a margarita. Details for this celebration will be announced at a later date. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.rungemortuary.com.
Cheryl had a saying for when things didn't quite go as planned, or when she needed to inject some humor into the situation: "What a Bonehead!” Then she would laugh, inviting everyone around her to join in the mirth. It is this laughter and lightheartedness that we will hold onto as we remember her. Rest in peace, Cheryl, and thank you for the laughter and love you so freely gave.
