He was born April 15, 1958 in Davenport to Dorothy Louise Rountree. He graduated from Rock Island High School and then went into the Marine Corps. After his service to his country, Derek worked in various jobs in the area including as a cook. He loved riding his bike and being outdoors, but, his greatest joy was spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his children: Yumiko “Miko” Lam, Dee Lam, Derek “Mookie” Lam (Lauren Akers), “bonus daughter” Mia, Davenport, 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a sister, Daladier Casey, IN.
His mother, cousin, Keith Kennedy, grandparents, Helen and Ben Thomas and a great aunt, Gloria Bassett preceded him in death.
