She was born on 21 June 1938 in Queens, New York, NY, to her parents, Samuel Winfield Winward and Eugenia (Wojnar) Winward. She grew up in Salem and East Hartford, CT.
In East Hartford High School, she played the clarinet in the school band, gained baton twirling notoriety throughout New England, and was also the marching band majorette. She met her husband-to-be, Edward Jamieson, in the band. After four years together, they married on 5 September 1959.
Her husband took ROTC in college and graduated into the Army. Diana was aware of this, so was not surprised at all by the travel involved. With their daughter Linda, she joined Ed in Okinawa, Germany, and several places throughout the United States.
Diana loved every living thing and had many interests. In addition to baton twirling and clarinet, she played the flute and Koto. She painted in oils and watercolors and wrote memoirs extensively. She loved her cats and dogs, and her flower gardens. She took pride in her yard, where she and her spouse worked a vegetable garden. The family enjoyed time together, travel, and community events.
She was a competitive runner and participated in a number of local races and beyond. Upon ending her running career, she remained active with biking, tai chi, and walking with her husband.
Diana served others her entire life. She volunteered with the Red Cross for more than 35 years. Later, she worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a Senior Girl Scout troop leader. Years after her girls grew up and moved away, they continued to correspond, being grateful that she helped them become productive citizens.
Her high school yearbook captured her perfectly: “A gentle lass is quiet, wise; She always wins because she tries.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Eugenie, and her brother Douglas. Those left to grieve include her spouse Edward, daughter Linda, nephew Mark and his wife, and niece Johann and her husband.
In keeping with Diana’s wishes, her body will be cremated, and there will be no memorial service.
