Diana “Diane” L. Toepfer passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Craig L. Toepfer. She is survived by her three children, Misty Seagren, Brandy Toepfer, and Arik Toepfer; her mother, Kathryn Reed; three sisters and two brothers, Bonnie Turner, Laurie Garcia, Denise Whalin, Jeff Reed, and Mark Ruter; three grandchildren, Jake Zielke, Noah Seagren, and Hannah Segren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Diane was born and raised in Freeport, Illinois, and nearby townships. She attended Freeport High School, where she met her husband, Craig Toepfer. They married in 1970, soon started their family, and raised their children in Freeport, living in the family home for more than 30 years until Craig’s passing. Shortly afterward, Diane moved to Iowa to be closer to her grandchildren and participate in their daily lives and activities. She enjoyed her home in McCausland, where she lived with her dogs, Henry and Ellie, who will miss her dearly.
Diane and Craig shared a love of nature, creating lasting outdoor and camping memories for their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and the many other children they cherished. Diane enriched the lives of others through kindness and generosity, especially children. Together, she and Craig raised three wonderful children and opened their home to many others, striving to be a positive influence in every young life they touched.
Although Diane was primarily a stay-at-home mother, she also worked with Illinois state child safety programs and rape crisis services, where she made a meaningful impact helping people recover from trauma.
Diane was a lover of animals, both domestic and wild. She was always accompanied by one or two large dogs and shared her home with many cats and small birds throughout her life.
Diane’s love of cooking and large family gatherings lives on in her children, who share her appreciation for good food and time spent with family and friends. She was especially known for her delicious Italian beef, many varieties of soup, and baked goods.
Diane enjoyed arranging flowers for special occasions and was known for creating beautiful wedding arrangements for family and friends. Her thoughtful touches brought warmth to every gathering, and her presence will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life honoring Diane will be held at Krape Park Community Building on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 2 pm to 5 pm, located at 1799 S. Park Blvd, Freeport, Il 61032. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Diane’s name to Fur Fun Rescue, Inc. in Lisbon, Iowa.
