Donald Edward Johnson, 96, of Davenport, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. Services to honor his memory are Monday, August 24, 2026, at 2:00 pm at The Runge Mortuary. Visitation will be prior to the service, starting at noon. His final resting place will be at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may go to King’s Harvest.
Don was born, January 5, 1930, in Davenport, the only son born to Vernon and Barbara (Diehm) Johnson. He graduated from Davenport High School. He was united in marriage to Donna L. Peterson on August 4, 1950, in Davenport. She passed away on March 16, 2008.
He had a strong work ethic and worked two jobs at the same time. He spent 44 years at Alcoa as a Roll Grinder and 15 years at Bernie’s 66, on the corner of Locust and Harrison Streets, where he worked as a mechanic.
After his well-deserved retirement and in earlier years, he had a deep passion for sports and spent most of his time watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and the St Louis Cardinals. Donna rooted for the Chicago Cubs, so it created quite the rivalry at home! In addition, he enjoyed fishing, cooking (famous for his meatloaf), dirt track racing (going to the World 100 in Rossburg, OH), NASCAR (especially Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson), gardening, and bowling having played on several Quad City leagues. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His love for them was unending.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Cindy Johnson and partner Marilyn Freeman, sons, Randy (Terri) Johnson and Tom Johnson (partner Don Kohl) and daughter Teri (Jeff) Haglund, all of Davenport; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
Along with his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by a great grandson, Kyler Haglund.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Don and his family. Your kindness will never be forgotten!
