

Edward Verne Holmes, 97, of Davenport passed away December 21, 2015 in Davenport. In accordance with his wishes, no visitation or service is planned. Burial will be private. He was born August 2, 1918 in Peoria, Illinois to Ora and Lorene (Hooper) Holmes. On August 16, 1942 he married Claire Elizabeth Lohrman. They were the parents of five children. She preceded him in death on January 23, 1993. Ed married June Powers on October 10, 1993. She preceded him in death on November 23, 2005.
Ed was a 1937 graduate of Davenport High School. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal prior to joining the Army Air Corps, in which he served as a 1st Sergeant from 1943-1945. Before starting business, he went to tech school in Chicago, Illinois. Ed and Claire started Holmes Refrigeration business in 1947 at 2230 Eastern Avenue in Davenport.
Ed held many memberships: V.F.W., Moose, First Christian Church and others. He played saxophone and clarinet for many local bands.
Survivors include three sons, Steve (Joanne) Holmes, Douglas (Janet) Holmes and Jeff (Shonnie) Holmes; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; step-daughter Linda Farrell; brother, Donald (Deanna) Holmes and sisters Beverly Shaver and Barbara (Keith) Fuhs. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by sons, Michael and Mark and sisters, Fern Stickel and Betty Poulton.
