Edward “Ed” L. Mesick, 95, of Bettendorf, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Private burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joan of Arc Foundation or The Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Ed was born on June 4, 1929 in Macomb, IL to Charles and Ethel (Edwards) Mesick. He graduated from Macomb High School in 1947. He attended Western Illinois University and St. Ambrose College prior to being drafted into the United States Army. Ed married Anna Casey on February 3, 1951. Together they had a son Charles Mesick. She preceded him in death on November 21, 1954. Ed was united in marriage to Patricia McCall on April 14, 1956. They were married for 67 years. She preceded him in death on January 9, 2024. Prior to being drafted, Ed worked for IA/Il Gas and Electric Company. He went on to work for Bituminous Insurance Company, retiring in 1995.
Ed played basketball in high school. He coached youth baseball for over a decade. He was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Eucharistic Ministers, Knights of Columbus as a 3rd Degree Member, and Evergreen 55+ senior club. Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing, riding motorcycles and playing racquetball. Ed volunteered at the John Deere Classic for many years. In his younger years, Ed was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan but later becoming a Chicago Cubs and an Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
He is survived by children, Chuck (Sheila) Mesick, Jeff (Stephanie) Mesick, Martha Shafer, Tim (Gloria) Mesick and Becky Mesick; grandchildren, Stella, Preston, Lauren, Jen, Spencer, Patrick, Natalie and Ross; great grandchildren, Ben, Ursula, Will, Liam, Roi, Giovanni, Eden, Emerson, Charlie, Elijah and Isaiah; brother-in-laws, Dean (Nyla) McCall and Richard Nelson, and several nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; daughter, Dr. Sarah Mesick; son-in-law, Dr. Roi Shafer; and brothers, William and Chellis; and one sister, Rose.
