

Eugene “Gene” Meyer, 76, of Walcott, passed away Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf. Services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly and Jersey Ridge Roads, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the Walcott American Legion. Memorials may be made to Walcott American Legion, Calvary Lutheran Church, or Camp Courageous.
Gene was born Jan. 27, 1941, in Davenport to Harold and Bernice (Claussen) Meyer. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962 when he was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Dolores Hass on Oct. 3, 1964, in Dixon, Iowa. She preceded him in death Sept. 13, 2010.
Gene was in the oil business for more than 40 years and was the owner and president of Gene Meyer Oil Co. Inc. in Davenport for more than 25 years. Even recently he was not opposed to an adventure in business when he started Geno’s Ice Cream & Subs in Walcott.
He loved being part of the community, which is evidenced by his involvement with the Walcott American Legion, North Scott Rotary, Walcott Community Club, Calvary Lutheran Church, Petroleum Marketers of Iowa and other volunteer organizations. He and his wife supported Camp Courageous and Special Olympics.
Gene enjoyed the outdoors and fishing and he was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers, and the Iowa Hawkeyes, while being a member of the I-Club. He also supported the Walcott Merchants Men’s Fastpitch Softball Team in so many ways over the years in their journey through the International Softball Congress Tournament schedule.
Survivors include his daughter, Annette (Ralph) Hughes of Blue Grass (and their children, Jackson and Samuel Hughes); sons, Captain Roger (Leslie) Meyer of Groton, Connecticut, (and their children, Michael Meyer and Jaden Bruns); and Marty (Lora) Meyer of Cedar Falls, Iowa, (and their children, Ethan, Ellie and Emily Meyer); brothers, Duane (Bernice) Meyer of DeWitt, Iowa, Ronald (Nancy) Meyer of Eldridge, and Jerry (Vicki) Meyer of Davenport; sister-in-law, Judy Meyer of LeClaire; and brother-in-law, Tom Roman of Prophetstown, Illinois.
