Mom Schachow not only loved to cook but had a magic touch when it came to making something grow. She was better than having a “green thumb” and spent a great deal of time taking in the fresh air. She even was still mowing her front yard at the age of 90. Her love for her family was deep and unchangeable. Mom Schachow will be dearly missed but we know she is in a good place with Pop. May she Rest In Peace with all my love.

I remember Eugenia from her days at West High School cafeteria.  She always had such a positive attitude and was such a hard worker.  What a wonderful long life to be celebrated!  Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Oh Peter I am so sorry! I wish I could be there on Thursday but I cannot. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Webster describes a hero as "a person distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility and strength".  My parents have always been my heroes.  After being separated from her family by the Nazis and brought to Germany as an unwilling laborer, she survived the war, then met my father who had survived over 3 years in a POW camp.  They married and found out they could not return to their homes due to the brutal Communist regime.  For the next  6 years they went from displaced person camps all over Europe looking for a place to live.  During that time 3 boys were born in the camps in Germany.  After turning down a opportunity to immigrate to Australia, they packed every possession they had into a 2 foot x 2 foot x 3 foot wooden box and left for America and eventually settled in Davenport.  The box is still in her garage.  Some memories I have about my mother are: as a young boy I remember walking to a butcher shop on 4th and Marquette that had saw dust all over the floors and the wonderful smells of smoked meats and sausage, or walking to the fish market to get fresh fish, especially herring that she would prepare in a salt brine in a crock and store under the sink in the kitchen, yuck!   The Friday night trips to Eagle grocery store on Harrison street where you could fill your shopping cart for less that $50!!  The picnics at Crystal Lake in Dewitt, the vacations to Lake Vermillion in Minnesota, Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, and Expo 67 in Montreal, trips to Chicago to visit close friends, Brookfield Zoo, the Museum.    My mom had to worry about my brothers and I being drafted into the army during a terrible war in Viet Nam with one surviving 13 months there, another spent a year in Korea stationed by the DMZ.  Plus imagine my parents anguish having to raise 3 boys during the 60's.  And boy could she cook!  Especially the Russian and Ukrainian meals, some of which I prepare to this day.  I eventually moved to Michigan were I have lived for over 46 years.  Met the mother of my two fantastic daughters, and finally found my true love and soul mate.  Over those 46 years I made a lot of trips home to visit and stay with my parents.  One of the hardest things I had to do was leave, and as I pulled out of the driveway my mother would always wave good bye from the door.. As a family we always had good food, clean clothes, a roof over our heads and lots of love.  My mom taught us by example how important family is.  How important hard honest work is.   During this trip the hardest thing will be not seeing her at the door, waving goodbye.  LOVE YOU MOM   Rest in eternal peace.

My grandparents in Iowa had the coolest yard. Long, narrow and sloping. They grew vegetables and berries and had fruit trees. In the summer we would pick cherries and rhubarb, and whatever else was ripe. When it got hot we would take a dip in the big water drum that filled up with rainwater off the gutter on their back porch.  At dusk we'd try to catch bats with a tennis ball in a sock and fireflies in a jar with our uncle.  There was always an authentic Ukrainian or Russian dish for dinner, some of which I cook today or eat at dads. Sometimes it was hard to understand her when she talked fast because of her accent and I still wish I would have learned Russian.  She would sprinkle sugar on my salad because I thought the dressing was sour. They would host parties with their friends and as kids we'd be sequestered to the basement but it was fun! We would skate around on the cement floors and play our own games.  I thought my grandparents had a magic TV because my dad hid the remote behind his back and secretly changed the channels on us. Out of the blue you might hear me say "that smell reminds me of grandma and grandpa Schachow's house".  We didn't live close but she was my grandma and she loved my dad and my uncles and her grandkids and the rest of her family and showed it the best way she knew how and I'm going to miss her but will always remember her.
