Funeral services will be held at Weerts Funeral Home on Monday, June 10. Visitation will be held from 11am–12pm, followed by a funeral service at 12pm. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice. The visitation and funeral are casual events. The "theme" is "You are My Sunshine" as that is a song Evelyn sang with her spouse, to her children, and even to strangers throughout life. Wear a “You are My Sunshine” shirt if you have one, in honor of Evelyn.
Evelyn was born on March 7, 1925, the daughter of Ed and Alice (Van Zuiden) Newendyke in rural Carroll County, Illinois. Evelyn married Floyd Perkins on December 3, 1948 in Fulton, Illinois. They had two daughters, Sue and Brenda. The family lived in DeWitt, Iowa, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and then as a couple in Richardson, Texas. Evelyn and Floyd moved back to Iowa in 2015. Evelyn was a hard-working, reliable, dedicated, and well-liked employee. Most of her career was spent in medical office management; doctor office manager and hospital admissions manager.
What is best loved and remembered about Evelyn is her gentle and compassionate heart. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing games, creating cherished memories of Skip-Bo, Uno, Sequence, etc. with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Even friends of her grandchildren called Evelyn “Gramma”. Her good meals, scrumptious desserts, and many types of yummy cookies still make our mouths water. Evelyn’s recipes of baked goodies and homemade noodles have been passed down, made and eaten through three generations of descendants. Evelyn and Floyd’s pool was the site of many fun filled gatherings. Evelyn was an accomplished seamstress, including creation of baby clothes for grandchildren and multiple matching square dance outfits for herself and Floyd. Evelyn showered love on her family and friends.
Evelyn’s heart of gold always saw the best in everyone. She had a deep faith in God that was shown through her kindness and heart to serve. She willingly helped anyone in need. During holidays many batches of cookies were delivered to shut-ins. There were no strangers to Evelyn and her husband Floyd. In public places, Evelyn and Floyd would see someone sad and sing “You are My Sunshine” to them.
Evelyn will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Floyd; two daughters Sue (Dick) Kvach, Brenda (Mike) Gruskiewicz; five grandchildren Stephanie (Cliff) Ford, Ryan (Jessica) Kvach, Aaron (Emily) Forrester, Andrew (Wendy) Forrester, Stephanie Campbell; six great-grandchildren Audrey, Evelyn, Kiersten, Janner, Silas, Matilda. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her five siblings Roy, Ethel, Louis, Rozella, Edward.
Evelyn’s daughters, Sue and Brenda, would like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Senior Star Assisted Living and Genesis Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they have given to our mom and to us.
