Fred P. Mueller

Fred Mueller, also referred to by his friends as “Fearless Fred”, passed away on Friday, July 6, at the age of 95 at Manor Care in Davenport, Iowa. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, IL at 11:00 am on Friday, July 27, 2012. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion - Post #26. Those wishing to attend services should gather at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary at 10:30 am. Frederick Mueller was born in 1916 in Independence, Iowa, to John and Blanche (Antonsen) Mueller as the middle child of eleven siblings. He was united in marriage to Bettie DeHaven in 1939. Fred graduated from Independence High School where he was a star football player, playing as the quarterback, playing defense, and doing the kicking all while wearing a little leather helmet. During World War II, he served in the Military Police and was a life-long member of the VFW and AMVETS. He was a salesman most of his life and retired from real estate at the age of 72. Fred loved his family and friends, and he loved to fish and camp. Up until his 90th year, his favorite pastime was to drive his RV around the country and he made friends all along his travels. Fred was an excellent story teller, and kept all he met entertained with the tales of his life right up until the end. After he retired, he lived in Phoenix, AZ as his home base in the winter, and then roamed the mountains in the summer. He returned to Iowa in 2006 to live out his life surrounded by family and friends. He hosted poker parties for his grandsons, son, and sons-in-law that later just turned into story telling parties.Survivors include former wife: Bettie Mueller; daughters: Jeanine (Bud) Blevins, Diana Ohlensehlen; sons: Richard (Kathy) Mueller, all of Davenport-Bettendorf, IA, and Rex Mueller of Fountain Hills, AZ; son-in-law: Mark Hornbuckle; four granddaughters; five grandsons; ten great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Hornbuckle; daughter-in-law Debbie Mueller; two grandsons, Dreu Ohlensehlen and Marcus Mueller; a great-grandson, Nathan Hornbuckle; and former wife, Wilma Vestal. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vera French Community Mental Health Center in Davenport.
