Fred was born October 14, 1936, in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from North HighSchool, Des Moines, and joined the Marine Corp; a fact he was very proud to own. Fred married Janet Glowicki in Chicago in 1958. They lived in Des Moines while Fred worked for United Airlines meeting lifetime friends, a common theme through his career. Fred left United after a friend asked him to work for DX Fuel and Oil (later to be Sun Oil Company). He worked there 36 years until his retirement in 1992. A testament to Fred’s amazing career can be found in many places, but the most important to him was that his customers from big and small companies all considered him and Janet their friends and part of their families. Together Fred and Janet through his career and on their own traveled the world, ever on the lookout for a local spot with a great view.
Fred also enjoyed numerous sports: waterskiing, snow skiing, golf, tennis, and sailing. He loved when family and friends would come and visit their Clear Lake home or join them down in Florida in the winter months. The grandkids were always the highlight of his life and his day, and he was so proud of their growth and achievements in whatever they pursued.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Amie (Mike) Burke, Davenport; Brian (Robin) Porter, Long Grove; and Craig (Susan) Porter, West Des Moines; his grandchildren; Jon Porter; Brianne and Michael Fischer; Tasha, Elijah, Danica, Chase, Carly, Grant and Paxton Porter; Evan and Elyse Porter; and sister, Helen (Chuck) Hoeven, Slater, Iowa.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Regina Porter; wife, Janet; son, Alan; and twin infant daughters, Beth and Belinda. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Davenport and the Catholic Relief Services. On line condolences may be shared at www.rungemortuary.com.
