Mr. White was our next door neighbor on Royal Oakes. There are not enough ways to express what a kind gentleman he was. I should also mention his patience with all the neighborhood children! His smile and laughing eyes will always be remembered in my family. My prayers to the family during this time.

I first knew Richard (as he was called then) when he and my older sister Charlotte were dating in the early 1940's.  When I was 15 I was Best Man at their wedding.
He was always kind to me and treated me like the brother he never had.  He had a knack for telling experiences from the Navy and lessons from the business world that I would share with my friends at school!  Some of them might have been "enhanced" just a wee bit but very entertaining!  Regret that I cannot be there to honor his life!

Since the Rotary Club of North Scott was chartered in 1973, I've had the good fortune to spend Friday luncheons with a gentleman in the truest sense of the word named George White. 
George, 89, lived an examplary life through his military service, his employment with Red Jacket Pumps, and his significant leadership in volunteer positions with the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency, the Davenport School Board, Ridgecrest Retirement Village, and others. 
Those were all important, but what I will remember most about George was his gift for making everyone around him better. He was a clear, level-headed thinker in all he said and did, but beyond anything that can be measured, he was one of the most affirming people I've known. He found his niche in the Rotary club as the longtime chair of the Fellowship Committee – visiting members and their families in their times of need. Just being around him made you feel all was right with the world.
When I last saw George on Dec. 7, his world had shrunk to a single room at Ridgecrest Retirement Village in Davenport where certificates of his Rotary achievements were proudly displayed along with family photos. On that special day, he was dressed in a white sweater and greeted me with the same infectious laugh and sparkle in his eye as always. 
There are many who could fill pages with great memories of George, but the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson at the top of this column describe him best. He was one of the all-time great people I've known and I'll miss him deeply. Rest in peace, my friend; you served well!

I grew up across the street from George and Charlotte.  George was like a Grandfather to me growing up and remember him yelling at me to get out of the street when I was riding my Big Wheel.  I also remember getting him to help my Father after he broke his leg painting our house and he fell off the ladder.  George came over in his new Lincoln to take Dad to the hosipital even though he was covered in paint.  George was the kindest and gentlest man I knew and helped mold me into the person I am Today.  George will be missed from this Earth but not from our Memories.  Love you George!!
