Guy "Jim" Abbott

Funeral services for Guy James “Jim” Abbott, 73, of Davenport will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary chapel in Davenport. The family will greet friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the mortuary. Interment will be at Pine Hill Cemetery. Following a long battle with leukemia, lung, liver, and skin cancers, Jim received his Angel wings on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf with his family by his side.Jim was born on February 6, 1941 in Quincy, IL, the son of Guy and Wilma (Geist) Abbott. He married Donna Beckman on July 8, 1961 and had three children, Jeff, Lisa, and Lori. Jim tried to serve his country in the United States Army, but was turned down because he had a wife and son. After 20 years of marriage, Jim and Donna divorced but remained good friends for 54 years. He then married Maureen Thompson on September 15, 1993. She received her Angel wings on February 7, 2014. Jim retired from Automatic Sprinkler in 2003, and then went on to own and operate AAA Fencing until his illness. Jim’s passions included playing pool, darts, and earning first place trophies for both in his younger days. He enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales with his buddies, Billy and Brad, as well as watching NASCAR with his family and friends. Jim was the happiest helping his friends, whether it was someone down on their luck or fixing their car. “Do it right or don’t do it at all,” could often be heard coming from Jim. He had no tolerance for a liar or a thief, and encouraged common sense.Those left to honor his memory include his Son: Jeff (Mary) Abbott of Davenport; two Daughters: Lisa (Greg) Williams, Lori (Tom) Haggerty, both of Davenport; Step-Son: Mike Dudley of Davenport; Brother: Ed (Juanita) Abbott of Muscatine, IA; Sister: Beulah (John) Schott of Colona, IL; 4 Granddaughters: Amber (Nick) Shorten, Jamie Lee, Samantha Haggerty, Kara Lee, all of Davenport; Grandson: Taylor Williams of Davenport; 5 Great-Granddaughters: Lizzie, Zayah, Avreanna, Lilly, Gracie; 8 Nephews and 6 Nieces; Close Friends: Donna and Jay of Davenport; and many buddies. He was preceded in death by his Brothers: Bill, Jean, and Leo; Sisters: Ella and June; a Grandson: Tyler; a Great-granddaughter: Maddie; and Best Friends: Steve Daniels, Gene Hass, and Swede. The family would like to thank Dr. Si, Dr. Anderson, Genesis Hospice, the staff at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, the girls from Metro Lab (Locust St.), Hematology and Oncology Associates in Bettendorf, and most of all to Gus and the staff from Hometown Café. In lieu of flowers and per Jim’s request, memorials may be directed to his children.
