Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. She will be laid to rest in Davenport Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gwen’s name to Beacon of Hope Hospice, IA, or Caring Circle of Spectrum Health, St. Joseph, MI. Gwen was born on May 11, 1931 to Ralph and Frances (McGill) Fry in Grandview, IA. On June 16, 1948 she was united in marriage to Verdon Carter. They enjoyed 45 years of marriage until his passing in 1993. Gwen spent the majority of her life caring for her family.
Gwen was a truly happy soul and enjoyed a good joke. She liked singing, bowling, playing cards, dancing with her husband, and gardening. Most of all, she loved and cherished time spent with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jack (Margaret Ann) Carter, Verdon Duane (Joyce) Carter, John (Sue) Carter, Carolyn (Ben) Bennett, Alan (Margaret) Carter, Ken (Pam) Carter, Les Carter, and Jennifer (Steve) Vonk; along with 30 grandchildren; and over 35 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Verdon; daughters, Donna Jean Carter and JoAnn Johnson; granddaughter, Sarah Bennett; grandson, Jason Capps; and siblings: Tommy, Oral, Luella, and Kenny.
