

A memorial service will be Monday, March 28, 2016 at 11:00 am at Calvary United Methodist Church in Walcott, IA. A gathering for family and friends will take place from 9:30 am until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens in Walcott following the service. Harlan was born August 14, 1923 in Louisa County, Iowa to Walter and Helen (Vibber) Hammer of Grandview, IA. He was married on June 15, 1957 to Nancy Anne Pyott in Denver, CO. Nancy preceded him in death June 8, 2001.
Harlan was a proud, life member of Painter’s Union Local #676, Elks Lodge 302 Muscatine, Calvary United Methodist Church of Walcott, and past-president of Lions Club – Blue Grass.
Harlan was a talented gardener and maintained a wonderful vegetable garden which he loved to share with others. He also loved to work with his hands and was a talented, self-taught woodworker who built several heirlooms for his family. Harlan always thought of others before himself and was a generous giver. He was often seen walking his dog, Patch, around the town of Blue Grass.
Harlan will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by daughter Debbie (Dan) Testroet of Blue Grass, son Mark (Lisa) Hammer of Coralville, grandson Chris Testroet, and granddaughters Shannon and Mollie Hammer. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Evelyn (Wilson) and Marian (Wich) both of Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, his parents, a sister, Rosalie and brother, Raymond.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Church in Walcott, the Salvation Army, or the River Bend Food Bank.
The family wishes to extend their thanks for the outstanding and compassionate care provided in his last days by Trinity Bettendorf.
