Harold Snider Lyon

Harold Snider Lyon, 95, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Silvercrest Garner Assisted Living. In hospice care for fourteen months, Harold died peacefully in his sleep. He was born in Lockridge, IA on May 27, 1921 to Robert and Valeria (Snider). Harold is survived by his brother, Max of Burlington; sons, Dane (Kimberly) of Independence, Dana (Carmen) of Callaway, VA, and Dannie (Mary Ellen) of Des Moines; grandchildren, Lucas, Nicole, Alan, Brittney, Savannah, Danielle, and Billigene; and great-grandchildren, Oakley, Hayla, Micah, Gabriella, Regan, Damien, Alyssa, Gabe, Sam, Chey, Ryder and Skylar. Preceding him in death are his parents; brother, Bruce, and sister, Verle. Having served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict, Harold retired from the U.S. Army Reserve after completing more than twenty-five years of service. Aside from military service, Harold was employed by Carpenter Paper Company from 1947 to 1986 and with Butler Paper Company from 1986 to 1989. Upon retirement, Harold relocated to Davenport to enjoy life and his many walks throughout the community. Long known for his civic participation and love of anything sports-related, Harold was a member of Davenport Lodge 37, Grand Lodge of Iowa A.F. & A.M., Davenport Consistory, KAABA Temple Shrine, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, and the Amateur Softball Association of Iowa. Family members will be present to greet friends from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel, with a memorial service following at 10 a.m. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family, who after thoughtful consideration will determine an organization to receive them.
