

Hildred Louise Nissen, 93, of Davenport, died Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Home in Davenport. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 11:30 am at The Runge Mortuary. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 pm at the mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
Hildred was born November 2, 1916, in rural Baxter, IA, the daughter of Perry and Clara (Plum) Sumpter. She had one brother and two sisters. Hildred briefly taught school after graduating from high school in Jasper County, IA. She worked in various service jobs in Central and East Iowa. While working in a restaurant, she met the brother of her co-worker and married him, George Nissen, on October 4, 1941 in Kahoka, MO; he died November 17, 1989. After raising her children, she provided preschool and after-school day care for many families. The children called her “grandma” and stayed in touch with her as they grew up. Hildred enjoyed walking, flowers, gardening and reading.
Those left to honor her memory include her children: Mary Teel(Joe) Donahue, IA; Betty Nissen, Webster, TX; Andy (Mari Jo) Nissen, Eldridge, IA; George F. Nissen, Mesa, AZ, twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and her sister, Helen Perry, Iowa. Her parents, one brother and a sister in infancy preceded her in death.
