James Alan Groenenboom, 81, of Davenport passed away on September 12, 2026 at his home surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 17, from 4:30 to 7:00 pm at The Legacy Room at Davenport Memorial Park, 1200 E 39th St, Davenport. His funeral service will be held on Friday, September 18, at 11:00 am at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Davenport following a private burial at Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Davenport Schools Foundation/Central Hall of Honor or St. John’s United Methodist Church.
Jim was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on January 5, 1945 to his parents Gysbert and Roelofina (Van Lienden) Groenenboom. He was raised on a farm in Eddyville, which he looked back on fondly. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State.
Jim was united in marriage to Barbara Hauser on December 22, 1967. Soon after they moved to Davenport where they spent their entire married life raising three children together.
Jim dedicated 34 years to Davenport Central High School, where he taught in the Business Department and served as department head. He also coached boys’ basketball for many of those years. In addition to his teaching career, Jim enjoyed helping on his family’s farm and his summer paint crew.
Upon his retirement in 2001, Jim continued to be involved with the Davenport Schools, including serving on the Davenport Schools Foundation as a board member for many years, volunteering at sporting events and leading CHS reunion tours. He also enjoyed traveling with Barb, playing Pepper with the Hausers and spending time with family and friends, especially attending his grandchildren’s events.
He is survived by his wife Barb; his children Julie (Dave) Doyle, Mike (Amy) Groenenboom, and Katie Groenenboom; his grandchildren Jack (Lexi) Doyle, Andy Doyle, Emma Doyle, Lauren (Carter) Erickson, Ryan Groenenboom, and CJ Soppe; his siblings Keith (Patty) Groenenboom and Dennis (Scott Hartsook) Groenenboom; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded by his parents Gysbert and Roelofina Groenenboom.
