James Arthur Payne, 95, of Davenport, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Quartet Senior Living surrounded by his loved ones. Visitation will be Friday, July 28, 2023 from 10 am until his service at 12pm, at The Runge Mortuary. A private burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials on his behalf may be made to VFW Post 828 in Davenport or the Hand in Hand Childcare Agency in Bettendorf.
Jim was born February 18, 1928 in Burlington, IA, the son of Arthur and Helen (Thomas) Payne. He graduated from Burlington High School in June 1945 and spent the following two years with the U.S. Navy assigned to the WWII Pacific Theatre. After his military service, he married the love of his life, Janet Lee Law on July 17, 1949 in Burlington. Janet and Jim celebrated 67 years of marriage prior to her death on December 30, 2016.
Jim was employed for over 40 years in the automobile finance and sales industries in the Quad Cities area. He enjoyed spending his free time solving crossword puzzles, visiting friends and family, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather. The time he spent with his family was his greatest joy.
Survivors include his children: Nancy L. (James) Rensberger, James A. (Ann) Payne Jr., Thomas L. (Delores) Payne and Christopher Payne, all from Davenport, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a sister-in-law, Annetta Payne, Rapid City, SD. His parents, wife, sister, Glorianne Eads and a brother, Dale preceded him in death.
