

Not all great men are famous and the list is one man shorter today. Funeral services for James C. (Old Dog) Sly, 91, of Davenport, will be 11:00 am on Tuesday at Koning Chapel, Ridgecrest Village in Davenport. Family will greet friends on Monday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Koning Chapel. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.Cunnick-Collins Mortuary and Cremation Service is assisting family with arrangements.After asking who would escort him that night, he left this life on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at the Crest Healthcare Center, Davenport.James C. Sly was born on August 11, 1920 in Little York, IL, the son of Morris and Irene (Carr) Sly. He worked in the building trades and retired from the Operators Union, Local #150 on July 9, 1984. There was nothing mechanical the man could not fix. He loved the outdoors, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and lived life on his own terms. He had three sons, Dennis, Larry, and Dewaine, from his first marriage. On June 19, 1954, he married Naomi M. Duree in Maysville, IA. Together they had three children, Greg, Linda, and Rosanne, as well as an “adopted” daughter, Linda Adams. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years Naomi, his children, Greg (Cheryl) of Bettendorf, Linda (DJ) of Blue Grass, Rosanne (Scott) of Davenport, Linda (Roger) Adams of Davenport, grandchildren, Nick Sly, Scott Sly, Betsy Ginther, and KateLyn Adams, many nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-laws, and a host of great friends. He loved you all. Pa can now go fishing every day and we hear the walleye bite year round up there. Thanks dad for everything you taught us.He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Betty and Virginia.We wish to give a special thanks to the entire Ridgecrest family and Genesis Hospice. Your care and compassion has meant more to us than you will ever know.
