Jerry was born in Long Grove on May 16, 1936, to William and Hattie (Schroeder) Claussen. After graduating from Davenport High School, he went to work for Alcoa (now Arconic) in the mill service department. He took pride in working on armor plating for 747’s. Jerry took a small break to join the Marines Corps for two years and then returned to work at Alcoa for a total of 43 years.
He met his sweetheart, Sharon Jurgens and they were engaged just three weeks after meeting and married on August 15, 1959. They had celebrated 65 years of marriage before she passed away on September 4, 2024. He was a loving and compassionate caretaker for Sharon during her final years.
He was a great father and stayed active in his daughter’s lives. In earlier years, he played ping pong and taught his daughter, Linda, who competed in the Davenport Ping Pong Championship. He also had a passion for playing fastpitch softball on a local league where he served as pitcher and his best friend, Bob Lehms, the catcher. He coached his daughter Diane in softball and coached her softball teams as well. Jerry had a willingness to help all his neighbors and friends in anything that they needed, including finding their lost pets. He and Sharon always had a dog that he enjoyed taking on walks. He liked listening to music, especially Patsy Cline and watching Roy Rogers television shows.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Diane (Corey) Surom, Atkins, IA and Linda (Bradley) Peyton, Marion, IA; grandchildren: Megan Mullan, Nicole (Matt) Becker, Natalie (Mike) Ginty and Noah Peyton; great granddaughters, Charlotte Becker, Emma Becker and Magnolia Ginty; sister, Marsha (Tom) Woleshin, Fernandina Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jerry was preceded in death by a sister and spouse, Mardelle and Jim Beech.
The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice, Grand Living at Indian Creek and the Hiawatha Care Center for their wonderful care and compassion shown to Jerry and his family. Your kindness will never be forgotten!
