Jill was the beloved daughter of George (“Jake”) and Mary Pilcher and grew up in Ottumwa Iowa, where she graduated as Class President of the Ottumwa High School Class of 1963. She continued her education at Indian Hills Community College before earning her degree in Elementary Education from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1966. Her passion for learning led her to later earn her master’s degree from Western Illinois University.
Jill married Darrell McNiel, on August 20, 1966. Together they built a life rooted in love, family, shared memories, and were blessed with a daughter, Kara, who was “her sunshine.”
Her love for children shaped a remarkable 40-year career in Elementary Education. Jill had a natural gift for teaching—she brought kindness, patience, cheerfulness, and a wonderful sense of humor into her classroom each day. She didn’t just teach lessons; she made lasting impressions on the hearts of countless students and coworkers.
Outside of her career, Jill poured her love into her family and friends. She cherished time spent together, including skiing vacations in Colorado, lunch with her retired teacher friends and found joy and strength in her church community. Jill had a special love for her grand girls, taking great joy in their lives and treasured the privilege of watching them grow into the young women they are today. Whether as a wife, mother, grandmother, or friend, Jill’s warmth and generosity touched everyone who knew her.
She is lovingly survived by her husband, Darrell McNiel of Davenport; her daughter, Kara Phelps (Kris) of Muscatine; her granddaughters, Madi and Emma; her brothers, Kent Pilcher (Judi) of Davenport and Jake Pilcher (Patty) of Florida, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and her ornery dog Cooper.
Jill was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Pilcher, her brother Don Pilcher and aunt and uncle, Jim and Lori Estes.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Ridgecrest Village and Compassus Hospice for the compassionate care they provided.
Though our hearts feel her absence deeply, her memory lives in the love she had for her family, countless friendships, dedication to her career and unwavering faith within her church community.
