Joan was born on October 27, 1933 to parents Lura (Steninger) and Carl Kracht. Joan grew up in Muscatine, IA and graduated from Muscatine High School. On March 1, 1953, Joan married her lifetime love, DeWayne Behrens. Together, they had five children and over 56 years in each other’s company. In lieu of a traditional full time job, Joan made their house a home no matter where they lived.
Faith was always important to Joan and she was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Alongside DeWayne, she often volunteered through the church and enjoyed helping out with Camp Shalom. In the years after DeWayne’s retirement, they travelled often to visit family and friends.
Throughout her life, Joan valued time spent with others. She especially loved cheering on her kids and grandkids at sporting events. Later in life, her love of socializing flourished at Jersey Ridge Place, where she welcomed newcomers and took part in many bingo games. The only thing that would stop her from missing an activity was if the Hawkeyes were playing. Her fun-loving sense of humor is already missed dearly.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters; Barb Mehrens of Eldridge, IA; Cindy (Dave) Thompson of Bettendorf, IA, Karen (Paul Thomforde) Behrens of Phoenix, AZ; sons, Randy Behrens, Mike (Beatriz) Behrens of Santa Rosa, CA; grandchildren, Corey, Casey, Kelly (Amanda), Katie (Tanner), Michael, Ryan (Erin), Courtney (Andrew), Butch, Braeden, Kailer, Matthias, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters.
