

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 11:30 am at Bettendorf Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 10-11:30 am at the church. Inurnment, with military honors, will be at Rock Island National Cemetery on Arsenal Island. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to the Bettendorf Presbyterian Church or Clarissa C. Joe was born November 5, 1929 in Sulphur, OK to Scottie and Ruth Gound. He spent most of his childhood in Newton and Marion, KS. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also spent four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, stationed in Japan. Joe was united in marriage to Marjorie Carter on August 10, 1955 in Savannah, GA and moved to Des Plaines, IL. He worked at World Book Encyclopedia in Chicago for 25 years and retired in 1991. He lived in Hot Springs Village, AR for 13 years before moving to Bettendorf, IA in 2007. He expressed his artistic creativity through many hobbies including woodworking, ceramics, stained glass and set design for the theatre in Hot Springs Village, AR. He and Marjorie loved to travel, visiting all fifty states and several other countries. At the age of 82, in 2012, he traveled to China, including Hong Kong and Thailand.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 61 years, Marjorie, daughter Kimberlee (Joe) Turner, Bettendorf, IA son Mitchell (Dana) Gound, Suwanee, GA; grandchildren Christine (David) Perkins, Ellen (fiancée Zac Rasmussen) Turner, Richard Turner, Daria Gound, Devin Gound, Max Gound and twin great grandchildren, Ryan and Jayne Perkins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Scottie George Gound.
