John Eugene (Jack) Bishop died Friday, February 22 at Genesis Medical Center – East Campus following a long illness. He was born February 19, 1941 to John F. and Donna “Diane” (Long) Bishop in Moline. He was raised by his mother and her second husband Leonard Kuhlman.
Jack married Sherry Ann (Glass) Latham on May 24, 1968. Together they raised four children.
Jack served in the U.S. Air Force, 1963-1967. He later served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1979 until retiring in 2000. He was active in the Employer Support Group with the Guard.
He completed a four-year journeyman machinist program at the Rock Island Arsenal. He then worked in various sales positions until joining the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the Post Office in 2003.
He was a past President of the Bettendorf Jaycees and a Jaycee International Senator; President of the Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library for 17 years; President of Chapter 776 of the Vietnam Veterans of America as well as serving at the state level; and board President of the River Dominion Credit Union.
Jack is survived by his wife Sherry, children Michael Latham (Julie), Jeffrey Latham (Stephanie), Kristi Swanson (Erick), and Jon Bishop (Penny); eighteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; sisters Cherine (James) Sandry, Pam (James) Long, and Trianna (Steve) McAllister all of Davenport; and brothers David, Donald, Wally, and Ricky Bishop.
The funeral service for Jack will be on Friday, March 1st, 2019 at 11:00am at Weerts Funeral Home Jersey Ridge and Kimberly, Davenport with visitation on Thursday, February 28, 4:00 – 8:00pm at Weerts. Memorials in Jack’s name may be made to the family to sponsor a meal at King’s Harvest Homeless Shelter or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
